Give a chestnut! Tableau Tips (94): Compare data with Radial Chart

published: 2021-05-31

In the dashboard below, there are some charts similar to the blooming of fireworks, showing Jordan's scoring in different years and seasons.

These fireworks-like charts are actually a kind of Radial Chart. Because their shape is particularly like a blooming flower, they are commonly known as flower-shaped radial charts.

It can clearly express the size comparison between different categories, which is convenient for users to make judgments. How to implement such a chart in Tableau?

In this issue of "Give a Chestnut", the Tableau technique that Ada wants to share with you is to compare data with the Radial Chart.

To facilitate learning, Lizi uses Tableau's own supermarket data source. We will use a pattern ray chart to show the sales of the product in each sales month.

Specific steps are as follows:

1. Connect to the data source

Open Tableau and choose to connect to the supermarket data source that comes with Tableau.

2. Create a calculated field

Open the worksheet and create the required calculation fields: year, filter year, year and month, profitability, profit division, profitability, total profit, radial field, radial angle, radial length, radial inner, radial outer, x, Y.

➤ Year

➤ Filter year

➤ Year and Month

After creating it, you need to copy another calculated field exactly the same as "Year and Month": Year and Month (Copy).

➤ Is it profitable

Here, you need to convert the year, year, month, year and month (copy) and whether it is profitable from a measure to a dimension.

➤ Profit division

➤ Profit

➤ Total profit

➤ Radial field

➤ Radial angle

➤ Radial length

➤ Inside the radiation

➤ Outside radiation

➤ x

➤ Y

3. Create a chart

Next, start creating the chart. First, drag "Category" to the filter, click the small triangle to the right of the category in the filter, and select "Edit Filter".

Then, check "office supplies" and take "office supplies" as an example.

Then, drag the calculated field "Filter Year" to the column, drag the "Category" to the row; drag the calculated field "y" to the column, and drag "x" to the row.

Drag the calculation field "Year and Month" to the "Detailed Information" mark card, "Profit Division" to the "Color" mark card, and drag "Are you profitable" to the "Shape" mark card, select "Line" and set "Total Profit" , "Year", "Year and Month (Copy)" and drag them to the "Tool Tip" mark card in turn.

Right-click the "y" in the column, click "Calculation Basis", select "Year Month" and "x" to do the same.

4. Adjust and beautify

At this point, you will see that the pattern ray diagram has been basically formed.

In order to enhance the visualization effect, we adjusted the color to "Sunrise-Sunset divergence" and the chart became like this:

Finally, we change the background color to black, and the effect is similar to that in basketball Viz!
